A healthy rabbit diet is roughly 85% good-quality hay, plus a daily handful of leafy greens, a small measured portion of pellets, and constant fresh water. Hay isn't optional — it keeps their teeth worn down and their gut moving.

The daily rabbit diet
- Hay (unlimited): the bulk of the diet — timothy or meadow hay.
- Leafy greens: a handful daily, e.g. herbs, romaine, spring greens.
- Pellets: a small measured amount (not muesli mixes).
- Water: always available, ideally in a bowl.
Foods to avoid
No iceberg lettuce in quantity, no muesli-style mixes, and never chocolate, onion or anything sugary. Introduce new greens gradually.
Frequently asked questions
Can rabbits eat carrots?
Only as an occasional treat — they're high in sugar. The cartoon image is misleading!
Why is hay so important?
It prevents painful dental overgrowth and dangerous gut stasis. A rabbit should eat a body-sized pile of hay daily.
