Guinea Pig Care for Beginners: Diet, Housing & Health

Two guinea pigs on a blanket

Guinea pigs need unlimited hay, a daily source of vitamin C, a roomy cage and a companion — they're social animals and shouldn't live alone. Get those four things right and most of the rest follows.

Diet

  • Unlimited grass hay for teeth and digestion.
  • Fresh veg daily — especially vitamin-C-rich greens like bell pepper (guinea pigs can't make their own vitamin C).
  • A small amount of plain guinea pig pellets; fresh water always available.

Housing & company

Provide the largest cage you can — far bigger than pet-shop minimums — with hideouts and daily floor time. Keep at least two together for company.

Frequently asked questions

Can guinea pigs live alone?

It's not recommended — they're herd animals and happiest with a companion.

Why do they need extra vitamin C?

Like humans, they can't produce it, so a deficiency causes illness. Provide it daily through veg or a vet-approved supplement.
