Foods to keep away from dogs

  • Chocolate — contains theobromine, toxic to dogs.
  • Grapes & raisins — can cause kidney failure, even in small amounts.
  • Onions, garlic, leeks & chives — damage red blood cells.
  • Xylitol — a sweetener in some gums, sweets and peanut butters; very dangerous.
  • Macadamia nuts, alcohol and caffeine — all toxic.

If your dog eats something toxic

Don't wait for symptoms. Call your vet or an animal poison line immediately with the food, amount and time eaten. Quick action makes a real difference.

Frequently asked questions

Is a tiny bit of chocolate okay?

Risk depends on the type and your dog's size — dark chocolate is worst. Always check with your vet rather than guessing.

Can dogs eat human treats safely?

Stick to dog-safe treats. Many human foods are fine, but the list above is never worth the risk.
