Budgerigar perched on a branch

Budgies need a roomy cage, the company of another budgie, a varied diet and daily time out of the cage. They're flock birds — company and stimulation matter as much as food.

Cage & company

  • A wide cage (horizontal flight room beats height) with horizontal bars for climbing.
  • Keep at least two — budgies are sociable and can be lonely alone.
  • Daily supervised out-of-cage flight time in a bird-safe room.

Diet & health

Feed a mix of quality pellets and seed plus small amounts of fresh veg. Provide fresh water, a cuttlebone for calcium, and avoid avocado, chocolate and non-stick fumes, which are toxic to birds.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep one budgie?

They do far better in pairs or groups. A lone budgie needs lots of daily interaction.

What's toxic to budgies?

Avocado, chocolate, caffeine and fumes from non-stick cookware — keep all well away.
